I became acquainted with Henry Hiż, the SSA’s first president, shortly after the founding of the SSA, and over the next decade I was studying and conferencing with Umberto Eco, John Deely, and Tom Sebeok, and I was reading Peirce at the suggestion of all four of these wonderful scholars. The semiotic awakening I experienced was indeed profound, and it is my honor to keep the SSA’s lights on and doors open, that we may help our rising scholars appreciate the beauty and fathom the mystery of semiosis.
